Doctors On The Move

ADVANCED ENGLISH FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES
This Change within Organisational Culture Workshop benefits the medical workplace. It builds on initial orientation programs to bridge still-existing language and cultural gaps. The whole Australian community benefits when IMGs are well-integrated – new arrivals themselves, patients, colleagues and neighbourhoods alike.

Benefits for the IMG include:
• greater acceptance of communication challenges
• more confidence
• becoming more resourceful
• feeling happier, more relaxed and effective in the workplace and the community.

The presenters' unique blend of expertise in TESOL and community-development provides tools for overcoming challenges like:
• broad Australian accents and Australian colloquialisms
• no-eye-contact situations
• lack of empathy from fellow workers
• difficult-to-catch speech in fast-paced situations
• other stressors

This workshop was well-received at such hospitals as the Rockhampton Base Hospital and the Redlands Hospital.

An enemy is a stranger whose story we have not heard.

This workshop is a collaboration with my colleague, Lorraine Dyer, an ESL teacher with TESOL qualifications who teaches Language Literacy Programs, Adult Tertiary Preparation, migrants and refugees at TAFE.
